HSV eSports continues to expand going into 2019/20 season

HSV’s eSports team are getting ready for the 2019/20 season, which will include a number of exciting projects alongside participation in the virtual Bundesliga

After competing for the first time in October 2018, the first eSports season in the club’s history went from strength to strength, with HSV’s eSports representatives getting ready to carry on the good work in the upcoming season. Just like in the real world, a new season starts soon enough and the club wants to continue to encourage and promote the eSports team. After a brief evaluation at the end of the season it was agreed by all that the past year had been more than successful, and that the innovative nature of the team should be maintained.

The current partnerships with FUN-Reisen and the Porsche centres in Hamburg have also been extended. Both of the companies will also grace the new kit of the eSports team that will be presented on the release day in September of the 27th instalment of the insanely popular EA Sports football franchise, “FIFA 20”.

Whilst some things are staying the same, particularly in terms of personnel there will be a number of changes; HSV won’t be extending the contracts of player Jannik ‘Testotier’ Berg or coach Patrick ‘Paddy’ Roth after discussions with both parties. The club would like to thank Testotier and Paddy for their dedication during the club’s first ever eSports season and would like to wish both every success for the next chapter. Both played a big role in developing the club’s eSports team through their ability on the console and their ideas and passion for eSports as a whole. The relevant parties are working on putting a new squad together, which will represent the Rothosen during the 2019/20 season at national and international competitions.

Marleen Groß, Head of Marketing Operations, outlines the club’s thinking when it comes to the virtual world: “we are very happy that the HSV eSports team remains part of the club during the 2019/20 season, along with its sponsors FUN-Reisen and Porsche Hamburg. Particularly when it comes to putting the team together, our aim is to have a good blend of professional players and some of the best talents from northern Germany. HSV eSports should retain its closeness to our core business, which is football. For that reason I’m sure that our team will continue to represent HSV in the best way possible.”

Roberto Cepeda, the eSports co-ordinator at HSV, is proud of what has already been achieved and is ready to point the troops in the right direction, especially the new recruits, whoever they may be: “we’re more than satisfied with what happened last season and are now looking to develop HSV eSports even more. In the upcoming season we want to continue to perform at a high level and increase the interaction with our fans. We’re currently still in the planning phase but one thing is already certain: the fans can look forward to even more interactive events, where they have the chance to be involved.”

Last December HSV managed to secure the services of two professional FIFA players, Jannik ‘Testotier’ Berg and Quinten van der Most, as well as the rising talent Niklas Heisen and started the new project with a whole host of ideas and a lot of ambition. A 5-2 win in the club’s first ever game against Hannover 96 in the VBL Club Championship in January 2019 was therefore particularly meaningful, setting the precedent for the season ahead. In the following weeks and months the eRothosen performed fairly consistently, so that by the end of the Virtual Bundesliga season, they found themselves in a very respectable 7th position (out of 22 participants). On top of all of their league commitments, the team members also represented HSV at many other events, including offline and online tournaments and other marketing events. Twitter and Instagram accounts purely for the eSports team have also helped to make the whole experience more identifiable, make sure you check them out and give them a follow to keep up-to-date with all of the latest HSV eSports happenings.
