"We didn’t have enough energy on the pitch"
HSV lost 4-2 in an intense all north German affair against Holstein Kiel despite pulling two goals back. The Hamburg reaction post-match is correspondingly self-critical.
Robert Glatzel: Overall it was a deserved win for Kiel and especially with the first hour, it was a deserved loss for us, which is very disappointing. We created nowhere near enough chances in the first hour and Kiel got their chances too easily at the other end. Nevertheless, we always have the quality to make a comeback, we showed that again today as well, but all in all we didn’t deserve to win the game today, as it was just not enough overall.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: A lot wasn’t good today; we didn’t keep to the plan that we actually had enough. For a long time, we didn’t have enough movement, enough tempo, enough dominance of the ball, enough power and enough desire. Even if we still then scored two goals, all in all it is just not enough. We have our principles, our vision of how to play and our patterns of play but we didn’t implement them enough. That’s why over the 90 minutes we didn’t deserve to take points back home with us.
Jonas Meffert: We didn’t play well over the whole 90 minutes, none of us, and so we deservedly lost. Even if we came back and made it 2-2. But after that we didn’t play smartly, you have to play with a bit of experience and, on a day like this where not much is going right, take a 2-2 draw back home with you. But we didn’t manage to do that because we were too disorganised on the pitch once again for both of the last two goals.
"We made life difficult for ourselves" Tim Walter
Tim Walter: We started the game in the worst possible way and made our lives difficult for ourselves due to too many errors, giving away an unnecessary penalty, inviting Kiel to have chances and giving away too many gifts. We got what we deserved for that. The fact that we can come back at any time is one of our qualities, and we showed that again today as well. But after making it 2-2, we didn’t play smartly enough and didn’t stick to the plan and have enough energy on the pitch.
Marcel Rapp: We wanted to play bravely, aggressively and intensely. We implemented that and resultingly started the game well. We also did well with the ball, had periods of possession again and again and created numerous chances for ourselves. With the HSV header which hit the crossbar the game could’ve turned, which then happened later on with two headed goals. The way my team reacted after that, continuing to do their thing and creating the next two goals is something to be proud of.
