Bad luck: Ekdal and Holtby both face a spell on the sidelines

MRI scans this morning revealed that Albin Ekdal has sustained ankle ligament damage and Lewis Holtby has suffered a knee injury. Both will therefore not be available for the first game back after the winter break against Augsburg.

A tough break at HSV. Albin Ekdal and Lewis Holtby will not be available for selection for a while. The midfielders returned from the training camp in Jerez nursing injuries. But now they know the severity of the injuries after they both underwent MRI scans on Wednesday morning. Ekdal has damaged ligaments in his ankle and is expected to be out for around three weeks. Meanwhile Holtby will hope to be back in training within three weeks after suffering a knee injury.

That isn’t good news for the Rothosen just a few days before the return of the Bundesliga against FC Augsburg (13th January 15:30 CET). There is a bit of good news, however, which is that Gideon Jung, who had been out with a slight knock, completed a training session with the first team on Wednesday morning.
