Heyer & Muheim in focus: wingers 2.0
Moritz Heyer and Miro Muheim also played a decisive role in the Rothosen's offensive as nominal defenders in the home win against Braunschweig.
In football, when you talk about a wing attack, you usually mean the two outfield players who come down the left and right flanks and create a scoring threat - the congenial duo Robben/Ribery might come to mind here. At HSV, Bakery Jatta and Jean-Luc Dompé are the current wingers, and both were convincing in the 4:2 home win against Eintracht Braunschweig. Jatta marched on the right for two and set up several top chances, especially for Robert Glatzel, while left winger Dompé added his name to the statistics of this match with many dribbles and two assists. And yet the duo Jatta/Dompé were not the only wingers for Hamburg on this day.
Behind them were the two wing-backs Moritz Heyer and Miro Muheim, who also provided plenty of forward momentum and had a decisive influence on the game. Muheim's perfectly timed cross from the left half of the field (photo) gave Glatzel the early 1-0 lead, and Heyer had shortly afterwards burst through from his right into the centre and headed in the 2-0.
Two goals from the two attack-minded wing-backs were not uncommon for Hamburger SV this season. For left-back Muheim it was already his third goal of the season, and for right-back Heyer it was his fifth. "We play a very offensive system, which we have all internalised more and more after one and a half years of working together, and the coach also expects us to play offensively on the flanks," Heyer explained in a media round on Monday after the successful start to the second half of the season.
Of course, he was also asked about his second goal of the season (photo). "The header was not so well placed, I didn't quite hit the ball perfectly," Heyer admitted, but then smilingly added: "But I don't want to complain, the main thing is to get it in!" Heyer did not smile quite as much when the conversation turned to the goals conceded. You could sense how much it pissed him off that it had come to two goals conceded again.
"Of course we want to play every game to nil, so it's very annoying that we conceded two goals again," Heyer said, "that's where we want to become more confident again." The next chance to do so comes next weekend in the away game at Hansa Rostock. A game Heyer is already looking forward to: "The atmosphere in Rostock is always extreme, the air is on fire," the Hamburg all-rounder knows from his own experience, "such games are always particularly fun, especially as we still have a score to settle after the first leg." In July 2022, HSV lost 1-0 in their own stadium thanks to a goal in injury time and Rostock bagged the three points. With the double wingers, it should be the other way round this time.
